Here are 7 common gas leak facts and questions:

Frequently Asked Questions

In most cases I recommend a full replacement as the cost difference between repair and replace isn’t substantial, however if your gas regulator is relatively new a repair may be suitable.

Some leaks can be repaired such as a leaking manual change over valve, located on the top of manual change over regulator, or leaking pigtail connections. All other leaks require a full replacement.

A simple and effective method is to fill a spray bottle with water and a squirt of liquid detergent.

Spray it all over the gas regulator and look for bubbles. Small leaks will present after a few minutes as a fine white foam as shown in one of the photos above, whereas larger leaks are noticeable instantly with large bubbles forming.

Repair costs vary, depending on whats required. Often, gas leaks are simply caused by a loose fitting, or an old gas regulator, and replacing these items fixes the leak.

On the other end of the pricing spectrum,  a 50 year old house likely would need a whole gas line replacement, as the old steel piping is often leaking in multiple locations.

I charge an upfront price where possible. If further work is required to bring an old gas system up to current Australian gas compliance standards, this would incur additional costs.

Yes, when working on a gas system in Queensland, a compliance certificate must be issued to the home owner on completion, and a gas compliance plate stuck inside the electric meter box which will contain details also found on the certificate.
