Frequently Asked Questions
Low water pressure in is often caused by a faulty pressure reduction valve. This valve will usually be attached to the outlet of your water meter or buried underground not far away, a faulty PRV will reduce the pressure and flow rate of mains water entering your home.
On newer homes the valve is installed on the side of the house, with a combination pressure reduction valve and isolation valve fitted. (This type of valve is called a boundary valve)
If only one tap in your home is effected by low water pressure then the tap itself is faulty. It could be that the aerator or flow restrictor is blocked, or it might simply need replacing.
If your home was built pre 1960’s you may have water pressure issues due to corroded steel piping.
Mains water pressure is often between 300kpa-600kpa, with a flow rate of 15-20+ litres per minute measured at the front tap.
If your having issues with reduced water flow in your home, you may benefit from the installation of a new pressure reduction valve.
All homes built in the last 15+ years will have a pressure reduction valve fitted by law, and if a faulty PRV is removed a new one should be installed in it’s place.
While many older homes might not have one, if an extension was completed with new plumbing fixtures installed the plumber would be required to fit a PRV.
If the incoming water pressure is too high, it can put unnecessary strain on hot water systems, pipe work and fittings, taps and tap washers. It can also increase the risk of burst hoses and water leaks, magnify water hammer problems and void manufacturer warranties.
PRV’s are set at around 500kpa and incoming pressures in excess of this are reduced down, while incoming pressures below this pass through the valve relatively unaffected (unless the valve is faulty)
Installation costs vary, however my prices is often cheaper then my competitors. You also get me, the owner of Pressure and Flow, not a random installer who isn’t interested in building a good reputation for themselves.
